ABOUT
US:
"We
were all in our 20's, it was approaching the end of the 90's,
the internet was so fresh and so clean and we wanted to use
this new technology to distribute the music we had been making.
All across America everyone was having success starting a new
business. So we thought, why not us?"
Microearth
Records was an independent record label that produced recordings
and distributed CD's online from 1999 through 2009. It was originally
an idea by Morgan Kraft, Aaron Bachelder and Michael Thomas
Jackson who wanted to start a cd/mp3 distribution service based
loosely on the business model of the 80's DIY cassette tape
labels.
The first catalog consisted of bands self-released CDs that
were made available for sale or distribution through the Microearth
Records website. These included Michael Thomas Jackson's release
Rompecabesa "Ball Pen Companion" and Bitter Honey's "Chipwich
Rollin' EP". Microearth was incorporated as an LLC in 2002 in
the state of Wyoming by Morgan Kraft, Anne Moore and Kris Harris,
with Aaron Bachelder and Michael Thomas Jackson contributing
as the label's first artists.
Later Microearth Records expanded into music recording and production,
with the signing of artists such as Josh Crane ("Barebones",
Microearth CD), Cyclub ("Cyclub Cyclub", Prescription Rails/Microearth
CD), The Particles ("The Man Who Made No Sense" Microearth CDR)
and Model Rocket ("Amethyst" Unreleased). This era, 2002-2004,
is known as the "Northampton Years". With the notable exception
of "Barebones" which was recorded and produced by Kris Harris
in Lawrence, Kansas, from 2002 onward Microearth Records recordings
were engineered by Morgan Kraft using a blend of analog and
digital equipment. This equipment was later featured in several
recording studios, including Silvermine Studios in Marshall,
NC.
In 2005 Morgan Kraft became the sole member of Microearth, LLC
with Anne Moore continuing to provide artwork/photos and Kris
Harris continuing to contribute as a songwriter ("Impossible
To Find"). Aaron Bachelder's group the Enrichment Center Percussion
Ensemble became the label's marquee recording artist, with Michael
Thomas Jackson continuing to self-release CD's using the Microearth
website as his primary distribution network. Aaron also published
several songs and serious works with Microearth, which had become
a registered publisher with the American Society of Composers
and Songwriters (ASCAP).
In 2005 Microearth Records released the critically acclaimed
album "Three Pieces" by the Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble,
featuring music composed by Aaron Bachelder. In 2006 Microearth
was registered with the US Trademark Office. The unreleased
Drunk Stuntmen's 2007 "Pirate EP" was recorded by Morgan Kraft
at Silvermine Studios. In 2008 the label released the ECPE's
"Ten Songs" produced by Aaron Bachelder and Erich Hubner, and
the Kraft Quartet's "Nervous Boogie" produced by Morgan Kraft.
The Kraft Quartet also released two EP's on the label, "Self-Titled"
and "Boiled Peanuts".
There are no new Microearth Records albums currently in production,
however some of the back catalog can still be found on Amazon.com,
iTunes and CDBaby.
