For over twenty years he has been involved in notated composition, free improv- isation, electronic studio work, avant rock and various group efforts and collaborations. In 1985 he founded the experimental cassette label Xkurzhen Sound and began recording as Cephalic Index in Memphis. In the following seven years the label issued over fifty releases and Cephalic Index was represented internationally on over forty tapes. Upon relocation to the Boston area and subsequently North Carolina, his interests turned to improvisation and composition. Although predominantly an autodidact, in 1994 he started studies in composition at the North Carolina School Of The Arts with Sherwood Shaffer and Lawrence Dillon on a Vittorio Giannini scholarship for composers. It was during this time that the improvisation group Spool Ensemble was formed with fellow students Aaron Bachelder and Joel Lambdin. As an instrumentalist, Michael practices extended techniques on the clarinet, employing microtones and multiphonics as fundamental elements of music-making. This spirit of experimentation has also been applied to the guitar, analogue synthesis, percussion and electronic feedback. Michael has participated in various festivals including The American Festival Of Microtonal Music (New York), Activating The Medium (San Francisco) , the No Future Fest (North Carolina) and434 Noisefest (Virginia). He has also been commissioned for two sound installations in Winston-Salem, NC, at The Sawtooth Center For Visual Art and The Werehouse. Projects and collaborators include Eugene Chadbourne, Brian Osborne, Katsuyuki Itakura, Thomas Dimuzio, O.N.E., Skoweyajeed, Rompecabeza, Viktimized Karcass, Zan Hoffman, Hal McGee, Rafael Flores, David Fox, Ian Davis, Choptsicks, Bruce Eisenbeil, Chris Phinney, Jerry's Finger, George Steeltoe Ensemble, Isolation and many others.
